PATINAS AND SURFACE FINISHES

In this intensive course we will explore various ways of finishing the surfaces of different metals to create diverse effects: colours, shades, textures, metallic effects, ageing and rust.
About the workshop
Patination is a technique to add colour chemically and or, to give the appearance of age to a piece. Copper left exposed to the natural elements in the air will react with the oxygen, adding to it, a layer of oxide on the coppers surface. It appears as a green colour. The outer layer formed by the oxidisation of the copper is known as “patina”.
This course also introduces colouring using natural ingredients.
In the course we work with patinas on copper and copper alloys: brass, nickel silver.
Some, not all, recipes can also be applied to silver.
Course content
- Preparation of metals
- Patinas: recipes (usually between 20-30)
- Oxidation of metals: silver, copper, nickel silver, brass
- Different application methods, painting, spray, vapor, heat, etc.
- How to mix recipes
- Diverse colouring techniques
- Application of fine gold, copper, brass and aluminium leaf to add extra
colour and metal effects
- Application of solder - combinations of all - experiments and more…
- Varnishes, waxes
The teacher
JUDY McCAIG
Judy McCaig is a Scottish jeweller, printmaker and painter, who since 1991 has lived and worked in Barcelona. Born in Edinburgh, studied art and jewellery at Duncan of Jordanstone School of Art, Dundee, Scotland from 1975-79. From 1980-83 she studied for a Master of Arts at The Royal College of Art, London. On completion of her studies she travelled extensively in Egypt and Europe.
On her return to London in 1984, she studied printmaking for three years and set up a workshop at 401½ Studios. From 2000 until the present day she has been teaching at the Massana School of Art in Barcelona and since 2009 at Taller Perill, Barcelona. Also acting as visiting lecturer in the USA, Germany, Portugal, UK, Spain, Italy, Canada, Chile and Argentina. She exhibits both nationally and internationally and has work in many public and private collections.
